Albuterol (albuteral) is a sympathomimetic (beta agonist) bronchodilator. It works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the airways, which allows air to flow in and out of the lungs more easily.

Albuterol treats bronchospasm (wheezing, shortness of breath) associated with reversible obstructive airway disease. Albuterol (albuteral) is used to treat or prevent the symptoms of asthma, emphysema, and other reversible breathing problems. Some brands of albuterol (albuteral) may be used to prevent breathing problems caused by exercise. Albuterol (albuteral) may also be used for conditions other than those listed here.

Albuterol (albuteral) comes as a tablet, a syrup, and an extended-release (long-acting) tablet to be taken by mouth. Albuterol (albuteral) is also available in a solution (liquid) to inhale by mouth using a nebulizer (machine that turns medication into a mist that can be inhaled) and as an aerosol to inhale by mouth using an inhaler.
